SESSION 6-FREE THEMED POST

KNITTING

Today I want to talk about a craft I learned from my grandma when I was about 8 years old. My grandma was always working on some sort of handicraft when I was little but what interested me the most was knitting and crocheting.
After she taught me how to knit, the next day I made a little sweater for my Barbie. It didn't look very good but it wasn't terrible either, considering it was my first project. She later taught me how to crochet and I have not stopped knitting and crocheting ever since.
I could spend a whole Winter day knitting or crocheting with my grandma. We’d watch TV, talk and knit or sometimes we’d just sit quietly sharing that activity together. There’s something very relaxing about knitting, it makes you focus on the present moment and disconnect from everything else. I’ve read that it’s therapeutic in a way that some other handicraft skills aren’t.
My grandma is not with me any more but I feel that when I’m alone knitting, she’s still here with me and it’s a very comforting feeling.

blog 5-Picture

My Grandma

This picture was taken about 8 years ago so my grandma must have been 87 years old. My grandma's name was María Luisa but I always called her María, not granny or grandma, just María.
My grandma was wearing that hat because we were celebrating New Year's in a restaurant downtown and we saw the fireworks from Entel Tower. My Grandma and everyone there, had a really good time and she enjoyed seeing the fireworks in the street with all the people.
I lived with María almost all my life and she was an amazing person, very lively and funny. She wasn't one of those elderly people who are serious and look a bit sad, my grandma was very positive and humorous and I think it was because she knew and felt all her family loved her.
María was always making tiny sweaters for all her great-grandchildren and luckily, even though she passed away last year, we found a box full of beautiful, tiny sweaters so when I have a child, I will have one of those sweaters. I will tell my child that it was made with love by my grandma, María.
